“The Millennium Development Goals were adopted five years ago by all the world's Governments as a blueprint for building a better world in the 21st century." Kofi Annan, UN Secretary General Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were adopted at the United Nations Millennium Summit, which was held in September 2000 and brought together highest-level representatives from more than 180 countries. MDGs were adopted as a set of time-bound and measurable goals and targets in order to fight the world's main development challenges, such as poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation and discrimination against women. Serving as a framework for the entire UN system to work coherently together towards a common end, MDGs remain at the center of the United Nations efforts on the ground. Millennium Development Goals include the following eight goals to be achieved by the year 2015: | Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger | | Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education | | Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women | | Goal 4: Reduce child mortality | | Goal 5: Improve maternal health | | Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases | | Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability | | Goal 8: Develop a Global Partnership for Development |
