Judiciaries, national officials from the Prosecutor’s Office, Ministry of Internal Affairs, and Police gathered together to discuss advantages and disadvantages in implementation of newly adopted law on the State Guarantees of Women’s Equality. During the Round Table, participants have also discussed revised draft of the Family Code.

This is a first Round Table of a series of Round Table events. Started in Ashgabat, it will continue in Balkan, Lebap, Mary and Dashouz velayats and will finish in April 2009. Feedbacks received from participants during the Round Table events will be incorporated into the draft legislation documents. It will cover areas of gender equality, women empowerment, education, family relations, reproductive rights and health issues.

The Round Table events are a continuation of work initiated by the Institute of Democracy and Human Rights in 2008, when UNFPA Turkmenistan supported the Inter-ministerial Committee on Treaty Body reporting and provided technical expertise on revision of the Family Code in accordance with CEDAW recommendations.
