Ashgabat, 2 April 2010 – Besides official meetings and talks, the UN Secretary-General visited the UN House in Ashgabat. Meeting the UN colleagues, Mr Ban Ki-moon emphasized that he was happy to see that the UN team in Turkmenistan works with a sense of dedication and commitment for the important agenda of the UN. He expressed hope that the UN staff in Turkmenistan will continue delivering as one United Nations.

“This is what we are required to do at this time when the whole world is going through difficult challenges starting with financial crisis. Given the limited amount of resources, our main task is to think of how to better use these resources to the best possible benefit of our clients, our constituencies,” Ban Ki-moon stressed addressing the UN staff during the town-hall meeting at the UN House.

During the town-hall meeting Ban Ki-moon also reiterated the importance of seven priorities for action - "A Stronger United Nations for a Better World" that he outlined as the UN Secretary-General in the beginning of 2010 that include issues of climate change, disarmament, combating the financial crisis and poverty, global health, peace and security, women, responsibility to protect and UN reform and accountability. On the last point he noted that there should be a two-way traffic when it comes to the issue of accountability. The UN should be accountable to member states and vice-versa in order to make the UN more transparent and effective.

Appreciating and fully endorsing the UN Secretary-General’s agenda, the UN staff expressed strong conviction that delivering on these ambitious goals is possible, as the United Nations deploys its values and resources: namely people working for and dedicated to the UN mandate and principles.
