United Nations Children’s Fund is the United Nations leading agency to advocate for the protection of children’s rights, to help meet their basic needs and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential. UNICEF works in 191 countries through country programmes and National Committees. UNICEF is one of the first UN agencies that opened its Office in Turkmenistan in 1994 after the country became independent. The first decade of cooperation with Turkmenistan mainly focused on child survival interventions and education for development. With UNICEF assistance, the country was able to reach the high level immunization coverage, achieve universal salt iodization, thus, providing optimum utilization of iodine nutrition to its population, and maintain universal access to basic education.
