UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, is an international development agency that promotes the right of every woman, man and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity. UNFPA supports countries in using population data for policies and programmes to reduce poverty and to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, every young person is free of HIV/AIDS, and every girl and woman is treated with dignity and respect. UNFPA began its cooperation with Turkmenistan in 1992 by providing contraceptives, basic medical equipment and training. From 1995-1999 UNFPA assistance to Turkmenistan was provided as part of UNFPA sub-regional programme. The first UNFPA Country Programme for Turkmenistan began in 2000 and focused on improvement of reproductive health and advocacy issues related to population and development. The current Country Programme 2005-2009 has been developed as part of the United Nations Development Assistance Framework and aims to support Turkmenistan in the following two components: - Population and Development Strategy
- Reproductive Health
