The World Bank is a vital source of financial and technical assistance to developing countries around the world. The World Bank is made up of two unique development institutions owned by 185 member countries-the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Development Association (IDA).

Each institution plays a different but supportive role in the World Bank’s mission of global poverty reduction and the improvement of living standards.

The IBRD focuses on middle income and creditworthy poor countries, while IDA focuses on the poorest countries in the world.  Since Turkmenistan became a member of the World Bank in 1992, the Bank has engaged in the country in several activities:

  • Loans (Urban Transport Project, Water Supply and Sanitation Project, Institution Building and Technical Assistance Project)
  • Technical assistance
  • Analytical and advisory activities including studies, reviews and surveys

Currently, the Bank and the Government of Turkmenistan have identified several areas of potential cooperation, which include avian influenza control and human pandemic preparedness, health insurance and health financing reform, technical advice on payments system, pension reform, and Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) sector diagnosis.
