Introduction of resource-saving technologies for the sustainable development of irrigated agriculture

Ashgabat, 21 October 2013 – A two-day workshop on introducing the technology of laser leveling of irrigated land was held within the framework of the UNDP project of Climate Risk Management in Turkmenistan. The main purpose of the workshop was to increase the capacity of local communities and develop South-South cooperation as a key mechanism in sharing expertise, experience and information.

The workshop was organized with the assistance of Climate Risk Management in Uzbekistan project, representatives of UNDP Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. The experts of the project of Addressing climate change risks to farming systems in Turkmenistan at national and community level funded by Adaptation Fund and farmers of three pilot regions – Nohur, Bokurdak and Sakarchaga participated into the workshop.

During the workshop the presentations on project activity in Kazakhstan and modern approaches to reducing climate risks in terms of water saving were performed. The participants discussed the issues related to the development of agricultural sector in Turkmenistan and farms of the pilot regions.

Uzbek specialists shared their experiences in organizing and carrying out an integrated planning of irrigated land in Uzbekistan and discussed practical technology applied by farm enterprises.

The local coordinators of the pilot regions noted the need of further development of such cooperation to introduce applicable technologies such as  laser planning in Turkmenistan and to pilot other water and resource-saving technologies, including drip irrigation in the foothill areas, agrotechnical and drainage activities for creating optimal meliorative mode of soils in the flat lands.

Following this workshop, Climate Risk Management in Turkmenistan project is planning to hold a round table meeting in early November with representatives of Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Water resources to support testing and further dissemination of practice in Turkmenistan.

The UNDP Central Asia Multi-Country Programme on Climate Risk Management (CA-CRM) has been implemented since 2011 in all five Central Asian countries: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

The aim of the project in Turkmenistan is to increase resilience of agricultural and livestock communities through more effective Climate Risk Management assessment and risk information provision.
